Ray Nagin is an American politician who served as the 60th mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana from 2002 to 2010. He was born on June 11, 1956 in New Orleans and graduated from Tuskegee University with a degree in accounting.
Nagin became known for his response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which devastated New Orleans and led to widespread criticism of the city's preparedness and response efforts. Nagin was reelected as mayor in 2006 but his administration faced multiple corruption scandals during his second term.
In 2014, Nagin was convicted on 20 counts of corruption, including bribery, fraud, and money laundering, and was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. He was released from prison in 2020 after serving just over six years of his sentence.
Nagin's fall from grace was a stark contrast to his initial promise as mayor, and his conviction highlighted the pervasive corruption in New Orleans politics.
